Why Do Septic Systems Fail?
-Using Too Much Water Using more water than the soil can absorb, sewage is forced to the surface or backs into the house. Two reasons this could occur: 1. an improperly designed system 2. change in water use, possibly due to a change in the size of a family, or an installation of a water using appliance
-Physical Damage Construction or driving on the leachfield can damage it. Tree roots can also clog the leachfield. Do not plant trees or shrubs on the leachfield.
-Improperly Designed Not properly sized, installed in impermeable soils or just not constructed properly.
-Lack of Maintenance The tank should be pumped every 1-5 years dependent on size and usage. Pumping the tank removes the sludge retained in the tank and will help to prevent clogging in the leachfield.

Household Tips
Pump your septic tank every 1-5 years, depending on household and tank size.
Install water-saving devices and reduce water usage in the home.
Do not use septic system additives, garbage disposal, or harsh drain cleaners.
Protect the leachfield area from damage by vehicles, heavy animals, or construction.
Repair or upgrade your system if a need is indicated by inspection. |
NOTE: Septic tank additives are not necessary and do not eliminate the need to pump your tank. |
